Hell On Wheels Premiere and Derby Madness - 5 July

"Hell On Wheels"
Watch the genesis of modern roller derby.

The Blitz Dames are hosting Hell On Wheels for one day, two shows only: a matinee at 1:00pm and an evening show at 11:00pm.

Hell on Wheels takes a from-the-trenches look at the dizzying clash of athleticism, exhibitionism, egos, politics and business that is modern-era roller derby. A group of hard-hitting Texas women overcome myriad obstacles in resurrecting and revamping the sport, only to find internal strife ripping the fledgling organization apart. Two leagues emerge from the clash, and what follows ignites an international roller derby revival. Shot over a five-year period by Bob Ray (Rock Opera) and Werner Campbell, Hell on Wheels was edited by award winning editor Conor O’Neill (and features original music by ...And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead.

"Hell on Wheels is a fascinating story and a fun movie."- Cinematical

"Part rock 'em, sock 'em sports doc (cue Trail of Dead) and part behind-the-scenes exposé the film is blessedly free of A&E-style jiggle and melodramatic pandering, and it makes clear the value of Derby for misfit girls who like to clothesline people. Best of all is the film's coda, which tracks the subsequent formation of Roller Derby leagues across the U.S. and the globe."-The Austin Chronicle

Hell On Wheels will be showing at England's oldest independent cinema, The Electric, in Birmingham. This beautifully restored cinema features a rich sound system, period detailing, and a full bar with absinthe fountain.

Give them some hell on your own wheels!

Who travels to watch derby and then doesn't skate? We hear your derby cry! On 5 July there will be roller derby skating running from 4:30 to 8:00 at Stockland Green Leisure Centre in Birmingham. We will have open scrimmages for those who have passed WFTDA skills and new skater workshops for those just getting their derby legs. Meet roller derby skaters from throughout Europe, exchange merch, work on your skills, and skate against the best.

Everyone is required to bring her own skates and safety gear per WFTDA standard, although we will have a very limited selection of used gear for emergency use. If you are scrimmaging, bring a white shirt and a black one (ok if there is a print on the front) and your name/number on the back.

Refuel
Derby works up an appetite. We will have pizza and soda included in the cost of the scrimmage, and will serve it at Stockland Green from 8:00pm until 9:00pm.

Party like a Rollergirl
Following late Hell on Wheels showing, we will keep going until the wee hours at Subside, Birmingham's alternative rock bar. Get to know your fellow derby warriors at this super party location within walking distance from The Electric cinema.
