Disappointing news from the BRSF website:
"Dear friends of rollersports.org,
today the IOC Executive Board presented the two sports that will be proposed for the inclusion in the Olympic Programme after 2016: rugby seven and golf have been selected as new disciplines and roller sports has been rejected.
Unfortunately, in this decision, economic values prevailed on sport values. It is well known that rugby and golf have better economic chances and television coverage. Perhaps this is the reason that why the IOC decision is not totally unexpected and it is been time that there were rumours about this possible conclusion.
It is since 2005 that we have assigned all our relational and economical resources to promote our disciplines to the sport world and to the international media.
We have done all our best to give roller sports the place they deserve in the Olympic world. Our presentations were also completed by a constant relational action with IOC members to show them that our sport is dynamic and spectacular: That it is a young sport and that young people like it. But all this was not enough!
We carried out our bid in the best possible way and the presentations we made, in front of the IOC Sport Commission first and the Executive Board then, have been considered emotional and persuasive.
However, the job we have made till now is not vain : we have obtained the Olympic world and media attention and, at the end , roller sports are recognized as a sport with a high athletic potential and huge appeal.
We must keep on working on this way. And we must keep on fighting to let our disciplines obtain what they deserve: to join the Olympics.
A huge sport hug
Sabatino Aracu
FIRS President"
Maybe they'll be more keen in the run up to the 2016 Olympics?

Rugby Seven is like five-a-side fotball.
They've also taken on women's boxing for goodness' sake!

Last thing I heard the Olympics is an amateur event, yet all major golf events a pro.
What a hypocritical bag of shite!

Am amazed they snubbed squash as well - I'm sure more people play that than rugby sevens? Bizarre.

I know it'd be nice to have our sport recognised, and be able to watch it in the olympics, oh yeah and have the chance to BE olympic champs ourselves and all, but IMAGINE the bureaucracy that'd fall on us. The IOC could destroy all that is good and pure and true about RD. We can do it better without 'em.
Yes, I'm looking on the brightside and seeing the positive in all things. It's nice this way.

Totally agree Mimey!
It used to be the way of life defining the culture, now it seems the culture defines the way of life... when people say 'don't forget your roots' it's a way of remembering why this all happened in the first place.
Going professional, being olympic champs... is different from being a recognised sport - we recognise ourselves --- imo we risk losing all that was attractive about this sport by continuing to move further and further away from it's roots.
No skater names, no fishnets, no attitude, no fun... let's not take ourselves too seriously and remember why we are doing this to begin with - well, for me, it's to skate, have fun and redefine myself to lift myself from the mundane.

See, this is exactly why I think becoming an Olympic sport would only be nice in theory. They'd never let me in if I had blue hair. How many javelin throwers do you see called Sleazy Rider or Ivanna S. Pankin? We're awesome just as we are, and we can keep the fishnets on this way too!
